Film Forum’s 66 film – month long salute to ‘Hollywood’s Naughtiest, Bawdiest Year’ – 1933!!! continues…

Day 9’s two-stepper, a Busbyberkeleython – 42nd Street + Footlight Parade

Lloyd Bacon‘s 42nd Street may have that infamous eponymous song, but it aint really got anything else on Lloyd Bacon’s Footlight Parade (wow, Mr Bacon had quite a busy year!). Nothing against Bebe Daniels, Ginger Rogers and Warner Baxter, but good luck winning a competition when the other team’s got James Cagney AND Joan Blondell!  Luckily both teams have Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell, who are probably the 1930’s most lovable & nicest screen couple + both films close-out with incredible numbers calculated by Busby Berkeley.  Oh, Busby!  How do you do it?  And how come no one’s really tried since, well, besides Mel Brooks?  Cause no one could ever top the master.  Bless you Busby!!!
