The first Academy Awards were officially presented at a black-tie dinner at the Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929, honoring achievements between August 1, 1927 and July 31, 1928.
Far from the eagerly anticipated and globally televised event it is today, the first Oscars ceremony took place out of the public eye during an Academy banquet at the hotel which is just a half a block away on Hollywood Blvd from where the Oscars are held today.
