test his lie-detecting machine on Dorothy Madigan in a demonstration of its new use to untangle marital difficulties. That thing applied to her arm is called a sphygmomanometer, which gives you an idea how scientific the gadget is. Marston, is a phychologist /attorney who claims to have the ability to discern truth from falsehoods with his machine and it was he who coined the tern ‘lie detector’.
